Sound rendered as image. Image rendered back as sound. A collection of cyclograms.

A mathematical transformation converts the timbres of sounds to images. Below is a collection of sounds with their cyclograms. They look like their sound — or do they?

The transformation works both ways. We synthesised images — fractals and spirals — then transformed them into the unique sounds those shapes encode.

An image-based musical synthesizer. The shape of the image is the shape of the sound.

Real-time demo

A vintage synthesiser, slowly tweaked. The cyclogram updates in real time as the timbre changes — you can see the sound shift before your ears register it. Humans are better at detecting visual patterns than timbral differences. Cyclograms are audio X-rays.

For the curious: horizontal axis is time, vertical axis is phase, colour encodes amplitude.
